Buying fine jewelry is an investment as well as a fashion statement.

Know Your Gold

The 18 karat gold is more expensive than 14 karat gold due to the amount of gold. Gold plated is a thin overlay of gold on another metal. Any store that pitches gold plated jewelry as fine jewelry, is not giving you accurate information. Avoid it.

Beware of unusual descriptions or measures for jewelry. Diamonds are measured in Carats and gold in Karats, not any other name.

Avoid Fake Diamonds

Know what you are buying and do not be tricked into thinking you are buying a genuine diamond when it is really Cubic Zirconium (CZ)

Keep it Real, Get the Color Right

Platinum is a precious metal. For example, a ring in a “platinum-type” finish is not platinum. White diamonds are graded into different shades of white ranging from white to yellow. Color is important. Even with a colored stone, like sapphire or ruby, the color needs to be pure and distinguished for a quality stone.

Avoid Poor Quality Pieces

Look critically to see if quality was sacrificed to cut price. A 14 karat gold bracelet may be set with low quality small diamonds. Check.

What is it that women are buying and not buying today? Sales of the traditional sapphires, emeralds and ruby stone jewelry have plummeted and have been replaced by the colorful and “cheaper” alternative semi-precious stone jewelry. Pink and blue-green are always hot colors.

After enduring a decade of the white metal and diamonds minimalism look, women revolted and the “bigness” of size and color became the flavor du-jour for women’s necklaces. Also, pearls are hotter then ever.

Some of the biggest name in jewelry designer made their mark specializing in pearl designs. Cultured, Tahitian, south sea, fresh water, mother of pearl, mabe pearls come in all shapes and sizes. Women want versatility in their jewelry.
